Düsseldorf University Hospital (UKD) is one of the largest academic medical complexes in Germany, providing maximum level of care (Maximalversorgung). Having developed on the basis of a medical academy at the beginning of the 20th century, today the hospital is a leading research and medical center in North Rhine-Westphalia. UKD consists of 30 specialized clinics and more than 30 institutes. The complex has 1300 beds and its staff includes about 6000 employees. Every year, more than 45,000 patients undergo inpatient treatment here, and about 300,000 people receive outpatient care.
