Austria Wiener Neustadt
MedAustron Clinic
MedAustron is a cutting-edge Austrian center for ion beam therapy. One of the few places in the world where cancer is treated with ultra-precise proton and carbon ion beams. The method destroys tumors close to critical organs without damaging healthy tissues. Specialization: neurooncology, sarcomas, relapses.
About the clinic
MedAustron is a unique medical center in the Austrian city of Wiener Neustadt. It is one of six institutions worldwide that simultaneously use two advanced types of ion therapy to fight cancer: protons and carbon ions. The center opened in 2016 and has already given more than 3,500 patients a chance at recovery, setting new standards in radiooncology. The advantage of the method lies in the physical effect of the Bragg peak. Unlike conventional radiation, charged particles pass through the body almost leaving no trace and deliver all their destructive energy strictly within the tumor. This protects healthy organs around and behind the tumor. The center's special pride is heavy carbon ions. They destroy cancer cells 3–4 times more powerfully than classical radiation, irreversibly breaking the DNA of the tumor. The method is irreplaceable against radiation-resistant tumors (melanomas, sarcomas), inoperable tumors, and relapses when conventional radiation is already dangerous. Clinical areas thanks to the precision of the beam, MedAustron successfully treats cancer in the most inaccessible areas: neurooncology (complex tumors of the brain, spinal cord, and skull base); oncorthopedics (sarcomas of bones and soft tissues with preservation of nerve endings); pediatric oncology (proton therapy protects the growing body from growth disorders); ophthalmooncology (effective treatment of eye cancer while preserving vision); tumors of the head, neck, pelvis, and advanced programs for treating pancreatic cancer. Scientific status the complex was created in partnership with the CERN institute and conducts research in collaboration with leading universities in Vienna. The government of Lower Austria has allocated a grant of €1.8 million to the center for the development of scientific programs, confirming its highest status.
